Funny Face Cake
I just love this recipe...we first tasted Funny Face
Cake at the Allentown, PA fair and it was offered as a sample of the
kinds of baked goods entered into the cooking contests.....If you
have never heard of it, you will be surprised to find it is actually
a kind of cake batter cooked inside a pieshell....yummy and unusual.
A slight bit like a shoofly pie, but with the chocolate gooey stuff
instead of molasses. Give it a try for something easy, inexpensive
and delicious. Great for a simple dessert at a picnic or to bring as
a contribution to a pot luck or neighbor's home for cake and
coffee.
You will need 2 pie tins with uncooked pie
dough--fresh or frozen store bought is fine....NOT graham
cracker!
Batter Part: 2 eggs 1 1/2
cups sugar 1/2 cup butter (or combo of butter and lard) 1 cup
milk 2 cups flour 2 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp.
vanilla
Syrup part: 1 cup sugar 1/2
cup cocoa 3/4 cup boiling water 1 tsp. vanilla
In a
large bowl, combine all ingredients for the batter part and set
aside. In a separate bowl, combine the syrup
ingredients.
For ease in handling, place your pie pans on a
cookie sheet large enough to hold two, or one on each smaller one.
Carefully pour the syrup into the 2 ready made pie shells, dividing
it evenly between the two. Then spoon or ladle the batter part into
the pie shells, trying not to disturb the liquid below.
Bake
in preheated oven at 350 degrees for 35 minutes or until firm and
just lightly brown.
As the pies bake, the syrup will create
a design in the "cake" part. If you want to try to make your own
design, you could hold back some of the syrup part and then drop
spoonfuls of syrup over the batter in the design of eyes, nose and
mouth.....or, just bake and see if yours looks like a Funny Face!
Kids would enjoy making this with
you!
